The University of Kansas School of Music’s opera department has earned third place in The American Prize in Opera Performance, college/university division, for 2024. This national recognition highlights the department’s artistry under the direction of Stella Markou, professor of voice and opera.
KU Opera’s acclaimed production of “The Turn of the Screw” impressed judges with its nuanced interpretation and skillful execution.
The American Prize is designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, directors, ensembles and composers in the United States at professional, college/university, community and high school levels, based on submitted recordings.
The KU voice and opera program provides intensive, career-oriented training for students pursuing careers in opera, musical theatre, music therapy, music education and vocal pedagogy. Each year, the program presents two fully staged opera productions, alongside an opera scenes program known for its creative approach. Frequent collaborations with the KU Department of Theatre & Dance allow students to perform a varied repertoire, from classical opera and operetta to contemporary and musical theatre works.
KU Opera’s students benefit from a distinguished faculty, performance opportunities with local organizations like Lyric Opera of Kansas City and apprenticeships with notable summer programs such as Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass, Opera Theater of St. Louis and more. World-renowned artists frequently visit KU to lead master classes, coaching sessions and Q&A discussions.
This award underscores KU’s commitment to fostering the next generation of vocal talent through world-class training and diverse performance experiences.
