University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, Business name new deans

Both the Schools of Pharmacy and Business have recently announced new deans. KU Endowment looks forward to partnering with them as we come closer to nearing our goals for the Onward campaign.

School of Pharmacy: David Dietz

The University of Kansas has selected David Dietz as the next dean of the School of Pharmacy. Dietz is currently a professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology as well as the associate dean of research strategy at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

He will begin his new role Aug. 1.

As dean of the pharmacy school, Dietz will lead the school’s faculty and staff with a clear vision and strategies to strengthen research and academic programs. He will be responsible for personnel, budgets, alumni engagement, fundraising, and government and industry relations. He will also be a strong proponent for pharmacological research, professional pharmaceutical education and the school as a whole. He will bridge pharmacy research across the school, campus, KU Medical Center and the University of Kansas Health System.

Dietz’s research has focused on understanding how molecular and behavioral plasticity in the brain mediates the susceptibility of individuals to drug abuse and relapse. He is principal investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health grants to study heroin- and cocaine-induced changes in the brain during addiction.

In addition, Dietz was recognized as a UB Exceptional Scholar, both as a Young Investigator in 2015 and for Sustained Achievement in 2023. Dietz is also a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, Society for Neuroscience and American Association for the Advancement of Science. He previously served as the president of his local chapter for the Society for Neuroscience.

School of Business: Jide Wintoki

KU has selected Jide Wintoki, Capitol Federal Professor of Finance, as the next dean of the School of Business. Wintoki first joined the school in 2008, and he currently serves as its associate dean of graduate programs.

He will begin his new role July 1.

As the School of Business dean, Wintoki will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer, overseeing its research enterprise, educational programs and administrative units, engaging faculty, staff, students and other external stakeholders to promote a shared vision of excellence for the school.

The dean’s leadership responsibilities also include engaging faculty and staff to work toward alignment with Jayhawks Rising, as well as leading the school’s fundraising efforts to transform business education and research as part of KU’s Onward capital campaign.

Since 2020, Wintoki has overseen all business doctoral and master’s programs, including those at the Lawrence and Leavenworth campuses, as well as the school’s online MBA program. He previously served as the area director of Analytics, Information, and Operations.

In 2017, Wintoki was a visiting financial economist in the Office of Litigation Economics within the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Since 2023, he also has been a member of the leadership team for the National Science Foundation-funded Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (EARTH) Engineering Research Center.

Wintoki’s research broadly focuses on corporate and international finance with an emphasis on corporate governance, and he has also examined the intersections of marketing and finance.
